Tom Carter, Carter Thornton, Janel Leppin, Domingues & Kane
Carter Thornton is an NYC based guitarist and musician. Best known for his work with Gnaw, Zashiki-Warashi, Pigeons and Enos Slaughter, his releases over the past fifteen years have spanned a wide gamut: field recording, free jazz, through composed works, abstract classical guitar, experimental metal, destroyed songs. He has a new series of releases, Mapping the Ghost, beginning this Fall on Soft Abuse records.
Tom Carter's electric guitar work weaves spare strands of melody into towering long-form drones, sculpting a rich landscape from both high-volume grit and charged silence.
Although best known for his work with iconoclasts Charalambides, which he co-founded with Christina Carter in 1991, Carter has recently focused on his eponymous duo with No Neck Blues Band co-founder Pat Murano; Sarin Smoke, his duo with Pete Swanson; and his solo performances and recordings, which have increasingly featured visual components - including collaborations with filmmakers Martha Colburn and Margarida Garcia.
Other fellow travelers have included Gate, Tom Surgal, Marcia Bassett, Christian Kiefer, Paul Flaherty, Tetuzi Akiyama, Shawn David McMillen, Thurston Moore, Dredd Foole, Loren Connors, Pip Proud, Inca Ore, Jandek, Bardo Pond, Starving Weirdos, Ensemble Economique, Steve Gunn, Robert Millis, and Matt Valentine, among many others.
Janel Leppin is a cellist and composer who weaves diverse musical styles within her work. Through the tasteful application of electronics and extended technique, she effectively removes her instrument from its conventions of style. Her range is broad; including japanese, indian and persian classical music, jazz, free improvisation, pop influences, the avant-garde and contemporary classical musical elements such as musique concrete and minimalism. Her love of Abdul Wadud and David Darling and SUNN (((O lend aggressive yet relaxing influences within her work. She has toured internationally for many years with various artists such as gothic Americana star Marissa Nadler, Kyp Malone of T.V. on the Radio and in her duo as Janel and Anthony as well as with her own work for her forthcoming vocal record Mellow Diamond. She has added to recordings for many labels such as Sub Pop, Touch, Editions Mego, Ideologic Organ, Cuneiform, Tompkins Square and Tzadik.
Domingues & Kane
Amy Domingues and Dennis Kane mesh the tranquil sounds of a 500 year old stringed instrument with electronics to create an organic blend of technology and musicianship that transcends genre. Their music is built on musical traditions equally ancient and contemporary. Amy Domingues creates hauntingly delicate melodies performed with an electronically treated viola da gamba (a predecessor to the cello), while Dennis Kane constructs rich soundscapes and accompaniments via electronics and keyboards.
