Saajtak, Us, Today, Heart of the Ghost, David Shapiro
Saajtak is a Detroit-based avant-rock quartet. Channeling the textural experimentalism of electronic music, the drive and energy of punk rock, the catharsis of tragic opera, and the urgency of polymetric grooves, they create a ritualistic sonic experience. Saajtak has created a repertoire of compositions that range from complex epic forms to short frenetic noise pieces. The quartet is constantly developing sonic environments that defy genre and entrance listeners. Saajtak was formed in late 2014 by vocalist Alex Koi, electronic artist Simon Alexander-Adams, drummer Jon Taylor, and later joined by bassist Ben Willis. Each member is an avid composer, improviser, and performer, with shared affinity for experimental music and sound art. Saajtak merges multiple musical streams to form a unique collective vision. Individually, the members of Saajtak have performed with My Brightest Diamond, Brian Ritchie of the Violent Femmes, Wadada Leo Smith, Dave Liebman, Karl Berger, Ingrid Sertso, Michael Formanek, Jaribu Shahid, the members of Wolf Eyes, and more.
Us, Today is a trio (drums, guitar, vibraphone) based out of Cincinnati, Ohio. Their style is best described as an avant-garde blend of post-rock, minimalism, jazz and electronic music, with a heavy emphasis on experimentation.
David Alexander Shapiro
David Alexander Shapiro, AKA alexander, is still young but he’s been an active force for some years now. His early life was spent just outside of New Haven, Connecticut, but his musical life truly blossomed while attending Oberlin College (perhaps not such an uncommon story). While in Ohio projects like Lituya Bay (Shapiro’s solo electric guitar wanderings) and Nagual (Shapiro’s collaboration with Ian McColm) took shape. As alexander, Shapiro improvises and writes acoustic guitar numbers for fans of Fahey, Connors, and Rose. Balancing equal parts Americana, blues, jazz, and avant-garde, and always maintaining the intimate qualities of home recording.
Heart of the Ghost
Heart of the Ghost is an improvisational unit from the Baltimore/Washington area. Comprised of Jarrett Gilgore (Alto Saxophone), Luke Stewart (Double Bass) and Ian McColm (Drums), this group is the culmination of years of encircling orbits. Collectively encompassing a massive variety of interests and collaborators and themselves known players in the circles of improvised music, these three find common ground within their individual vocabularies: an aim to deconstruct and reshape canonized creative tropes into a new & stunning language.
